One cool and sunny Sunday morning, I decided to teach my kids a thing or two on organic gardening.
My plants were in serious need of some pampering so I pulled out several bags of used up coffee grinds from Starbucks and had them help me scatter the grinds in the garden.
For them it was mostly play. They loved the feel of the wet and mushy coffee grinds on their little hands. And they loved that the whole thing came with an impromptu lecture on flowers, fertilizer, and earthworms.
I told them that the coffee grinds would serve as food for the little earthworms that lived in the garden. Once the critters ate up the grinds, they would poop and the poop would be the fertilizer of the plants. To prove my point, I showed them that our tiny lawn had little mounds of earthworm dung. This excited them all the more that they emptied 3 bags of coffee grinds on the grass!
All I did was watch as they deftly scattered the grinds on the outside garden as well as on my potted plants.
They were rewarded with their favorite Grilled 2-Cheese Sandwich for their efforts. How’s that for an early morning lesson?!?

interesting how education can be had in a fun way! and it should be done this way.
when the children were young, i had also taught them things in a fun way, too. i saw how they were so hungry for knowledge, and i took advantage of every bit of opportunity there was.

I love it! It’s great how our simple gardens can teach our kids a multitude of lessons. That’s one way of raising them to be eco-friendly too. Good job President Mama!
