Froyo is today’s hot pandesal of the moment.  If you’ve noticed, frozen yogurt stalls have been popping up almost everywhere.  Even some restaurants have included frozen yogurt in their desert menu.

Personally, I think that this is a good thing.  Not that I’m against having an occasional ice cream cone….with 2 scoops of ice cream.  For me its variety.  Better to have more to choose from than just settling with a few choices.  The plus side being…its healthier.  The downside….its a bit expensive.

Now my kids are frozen yogurt fans so much so that when given a choice between real ice cream and frozen yogurt they have a difficult time in choosing.  Much as I would like to treat them out everyday to frozen yogurt, my wallet does not have enough muscle to do this.  So what is a thrifty Mom to do when faced with this dilemna?

DIY!!!  Of course.

In my case, since I don’t have the patience to whip out the ice cream making machine which, btw, I haven’t used in years, I’ll just do it the easy way.  How?  Well, just use store bought yogurt and make yogurt pops.  I bought one of those ice pop containers at Saizen to be able to do this.  Rather than using the plastic sticks that came with it, I opted to use wooden popsicle sticks instead.  The kids find it easier to hold.

So to begin, first spray the inside of the ice pop containers with non-stick spray, like Pam, so you can pull out the frozen yogurt pops with ease.

For the mix, use 1 flavored yogurt container for 2 ice pops.  Empty the yogurt into a bowl and add 1/4 of milk.  Stir until well blended.  Then pour into the containers and freeze for an hour.

After an hour the yogurt should be frozen enough to be able to put the popsicle sticks in. Then freeze again for another 4 hours. When they are completely frozen you can pop them out. If you’re kids aren’t there to eat them up right away, put them in individual plastic bags and stash them in the freezer.

I usually make them in different flavors for the kids. They enjoy them as an after school treat and for dessert. And my husband sneaks into the kitchen late at night to have his yogurt pop too.
